BIOGRAPHY
Angélica María Hartman Ortiz, known simply as Angélica María, is a Mexican singer and actress, born on September 27, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Daughter of the American businessman and musician Arnold Hartman and the theater producer Angélica de Jesús Ortiz Sandoval, Angélica would move with her mother to Mexico City, at the age of 5, after her parents divorced.
Her mother’s sister, Yolanda Ortiz, was an actress, with some recognition, and she was the one who took Angélica to a party where they met the famous producer Gregorio Wallerstein. The producer told them that he was looking for young talent for her next film. Angelica María asked that she take her to the audition for the film, which was successful, as she obtained one of her roles in the film Pecado .
Little by little, her career consolidated, which gave her the opportunity to participate in the films A Decent Woman, The Daughter of the Other, Los Amantes, Fierecilla, Follow Me Heart and My Wife and the Other , a film with which she was made winner of her first Ariel award, at 6 years of age.
In 1955 Rita Macedo called her to star in La Mala Semilla , a play that would mark her debut in the theater. After several seasons in the theater, she returned to film and starred in the films Sublime Melodía, El Buen Ladrón, Música de Siempre, Flores para mi General and different La Pandilla films.
By 1962, at 17 years old, she had one soap opera and seven television programs under her belt. She would soon become “The Bride of Youth”, but the journalist Octavio de Alba names her “The Bride of Mexico”, a nickname by which she is known to this day. After meeting Armando Manzanero, she realizes her dream of recording her first album. From this first musical production the hit music ‘Eddie Eddie’ was released, achieving first place sales. Her popularity would lead her to make films, songs and tours with youth idols Cesar Costa and Enrique Guzmán, at that time, the kings of rock in Mexico. By 1970 she was considered the most beloved and important Spanish-speaking artist. A year later she worked alongside Don Ernesto Alonso, Vicente Fernández, and Juan Gabriel.
The bride from Mexico married Armando Vale in 1974 and the union was the first to be televised in the country. That same year, Angélica performed two nights at Madison Square Garden, selling out both days. Angélica María is the mother of the actress, Angélica Vale.
